Luck Is When Preparation Meets Opportunity

"You're just lucky," they tell me.

"I'm happy for you—you were lucky."

But luck, as I see it, is nothing more than preparation meeting opportunity. When you prepare, you attract the chance. And when that chance finally shows up, if you're ready…well, it just looks like luck.

I remember the warehouse.

The endless aisles of pallets. The fluorescent hum overhead. And me—hiding in plain sight—looping a cybersecurity course on my phone, pausing every time the team leader rounded the corner. Because music in your ears was fine. Learning? That was something else.

During break, I'd haul out that massive book, slip behind the warehouse, and lose myself in ports, packets, exploits—30 minutes of stolen time. Then home: bedtime stories, bedtime routines, and then…back to the grindstone. Night after night, day after day. No applause. No visible progress. Just raw determination.

Some call that luck. I call it destiny in the making.

When I finally swapped steel-toed boots for an office chair—as a fledgling Tier 2 Technician... I felt the old shame creep in. I dodged questions about my past, smoothed over my origin story. Silly little humans we are, hiding the chapters that made us. But confidence grows in the soil of honesty.

Now, I say it loud: I started in a warehouse—and that's exactly why I'm here today.

Yes, I passed the first interview. Today I tackled stage two. Did I land the job? Not yet. That's future me's problem. The interview is dessert—a well-earned one—but the real feast is who I've become along the way.

I began with minimum wage and maximum questions. I leaned on mentors, good friends, and my faith—trusting that God had a blueprint for me even when the path was invisible. And step by step, I elevated myself.

So here's my meditation for anyone scanning barcodes or stacking boxes right now:

You're not lucky.

You're preparing.

And when your moment arrives, you'll be ready—and it'll feel like magic. But behind that magic is every stolen half-hour, every late-night review, every moment you chose growth over comfort.
